Learning Craps - How to get better!

So! You want to learn to play craps? You've definitely come to the right place. This page is all about learning craps, and how to play this great casino game. On this page you'll find the information you need to make your next attempt at getting up close and personal with a craps table much less intimidating. It's easy to understand how one might feel some trepidation at walking up to a craps table in a casino while there's a rowdy game going on. If you've never played before, and you're learning craps for the first time, it can all be overwhelming. The first bit of advice for anyone in that situation is to seek out a good free online craps game, and get in some serious practice. That way, you'll feel much more comfortable when you next encounter what can easily be the loudest place in the casino!

When learning craps for the first time, it's helpful to know a bit about the lingo, and what other players might be shouting at the table. First of all, the player that's rolling the dice is called the Shooter. The other people at the table that you should know about are those that are working at the table. First of all, when you're learning craps you need to know that the casino worker in charge of all the goings on at the table is called the Boxman, and sitting opposite him is the Stickman who calls out the dice total and gathers and returns the dice to the shooter. He's got a long stick with a curved end to get the dice with; that's how he got his name. And also notice on the same side of the table as the Boxman are two Dealers. The Dealers handle all the bets on their respective ends of the table. See the picture below for their positions.

There are also a couple of other of the finer points that you should know when you learn about craps. Never, under any circumstances, shout out “Seven” when the dice are rolled. This is considered to be extremely bad luck by hardcore craps players, who tend to be quite superstitious. Also, though you've seen it in movies and on TV, don't kiss or blow on the dice. This is also frowned upon because of the potential to spread germs to the next shooter. Another thing about rolling the dice is that you should give them a pretty good toss, because, in order to be considered a true roll, they need to bounce off the far end of the table. When you're first learning craps, you'll notice how deep the table is, or how high the rim of the table is. And the inside edges have a sort of uneven foam surface on them so that when the dice bounce off it, it will help to randomize the outcome of the roll. Don't get too aggressive though; you don't want the dice ending up on the other side of the room!

You'll definitely want to visit our craps rules page and our craps betting page, along with the craps table layout page after finishing up here.
